When We Were Kids

Every few hundred days
Out of the few of our years
We count back all the things
We cherish and we miss
Its good to reflect as we do
At the rate which we grew
So lets journey back to the days
When we were kids....

Standing in class lines
Lining up like soldiers
Singing the black mans anthem of choice
You know what is : Lift Every Voice
I remember when they would single out
One of our classmates to sing
You'd think Whitney or Luther took the stage
It was music fit for Kings

Suicide off the walls
Got a little personal at times
I remember the sting of the ball
But hey thats how the game is designed
Playing tag with body parts!...
Probly Enough said on this...
Well actually, there's so much more to say
But I think I'd get in trouble for it!
Stealing girls food/drinks/bags or items
Tossing it to your friends
While they chased us to find em
We hoped recess would never end

-------------------------------------------------
For nearly 200 days,
Every year we would pray
That we would wake up to be
The coolest kid we could be
No matter what we would do
It had to be with the crew
We never imagined life like this
Back when we were kids...
-------------------------------------------------------------

--In class some of us struggled
fighting hard to pay attention
Not made easier by the class clown's
or the smart kid with all the answers
--Gold stars on cardboard
Cataloguing our efforts
For some of us, just having one
Was like an Oscar reception
--Where would we be without our teachers?
I thank God for every one of em
Even the really annoying ones,
Who made us fight ourselves just to tolerate em

--North Face, coats and book cases
Some of us couldnt afford em
families struggling for dollars
but we saved and we bought em
--School lunches and snack lines
50 Cents on the fritos
Hustling capri suns in a cooler
Or selling Sun chips and Doritos
--Before we paid taxes
There was Air Max's
Before we had bills to pay
Our business acumen consisted of
Crazy eights and Spades

--Air Force One's before summer
A fresh white pair was a symbol
There was always someone with a cleaner one
And there was always someone who wished for one
--Fortunately now we know (hopefully)
That Fresh Kicks don't mean stay-tus
But it's who you are inside
Not what you "make", that makes us
Plus we got bills to pay,
Rents taken the place of Status

--Fights we had with a friend
We Wish that we never did
Cuz looking back at it today
It made the world of a difference
--If we could have back precious days
Worrying about all of the ways
We misunderstood one another
We lost out on sisters and brothers
--Yet if it wasnt for those years
With all the fright and the tears
We wouldn't have grown up to be
The men and women that we now see
